A Builder's Tale: How His Bride Got a Bobber

By Darnell Austria

Sioux Falls' Jaimie Kangas, possesses and rides this very sparkling firm framework Sportster, custom-built for her by her husband Jason, of Twisted Choppers. He focuses on signature style bikes. This is only Jaimie's 2nd custom made motorbike, her very first was actually a radically raked rigid motorbike, which was also built by her husband.

This tailor made bobber is basically different from Jaimie's very first machine. It includes more like a classic race look to it, as opposed to a traditional raked and pulled road bike appearance. She desired a customized motorcycle that's lighter and smaller to ensure that it would go with her riding technique and would remain comfortable to drive.

A 2001 Harley XL 1200 was acquired as being a donor bobber for the challenge and even though it had been a comprehensive and outstanding motorcycle, they quickly split apart. The body was sliced up and modified to receive a personalized hard-tail kit. These kits come with all the components and hardware for remodeling any Harley-Davidson Sportster into a rigid frame motorcycle.

Also included from the package is a tailor made oil tank, rear end fender, seat, and a custom made battery power compartment. So obviously, once Jason had the frame welded back together together with the remaining elements on, there was clearly very little left of the primary donor motorcycle other than the drive-train and front frame section. The exhaust , saddle and mounts, and handle bars amongst other things were all made by hand for this motorbike. And at the start, Jason built a springer front-end for the particular length needed to keep up with the desired ride height to meet Jaimie's specs.

Whenever questioned what is probably the most challenging part of the project, she responded, "Getting Jason to finish the motorcycle! The entire build began as my 2nd customized bike, so it kept getting placed on standby, having a back seat along with other constructions in the shop. More than a year passed with little work getting done on it."

Jaimie ended up selling her bike over the winter and now bike season nearing fast, Jaimie wants to be there without having a motorbike. So she gave Jason a kick in the pants and the build started to gain momentum and was finally finished in the spring. The motorcycle uses a blend of new and old parts to acquire a simple but classic looks that looks fine from any perspective. And with the Sportster drive-train fitted in the sleek and stylish framework, it provides a lot of horses for Jaimie's day to day driving pleasure.
