Step 1: Regular Oil Changes (for typical 150 cc moped scooters)

Regular oil changes are the 1st requirement, and are definitely the important thing you can do to prolong the life of your engine and scooter. It does not a lot, and it will do amazing things for the engine. A general rule of thumb, is to have the oil changed each one thousand miles. If you ride a lot , you might need to change it each 1,500 or so. Or if you don't ride that much, at least ensure you are changing the oil once per season. Also note, for new moped scooters, I suggest changing the oil in the first three hundred miles. There is a lot of debris and junk from the factory that will get into the engine when it's initially assembled, so it's very important to get one done early. Oil changes are straightforward to do, and there's no reason to not get it done. But if you do not like getting your hands dirty, or you simply do not want to do it, then take it to a shop. But make sure you get it done.

Step 2: Transmission Oil Change - for standard 150 cc moped scooters

Transmission oil is another critical maintenance step in prolonging the life of your engine. If you don't change it, the oil can carry junk or debris from the continual engine friction, and potentially will excessively wear on your gears. Like oil changes, it is also an easy step that is not that expensive, and it's great for extending the life of moped scooters. It really depends on how much you ride, but I recommend changing this each 3,000 miles or at least once a year.

Step 3: Change The Air Filter (for typical 150 cc moped scooters)

Air filters screen and cleanse all the debris and pollutants from your scooter, the valves, fuel lines, pipes, and most importantly, the engine. Having a fresh air filter is one more way to save your engine from debris build up, and making it work harder over the years. Your engine will say thank you for having a fresh air filter with smoother rides and a much longer life. The nice thing about air filters, is they don't typically need to be replaced often, every few years or so. But they have to be cleaned consistently so as to work properly. Check you are cleaning your air filter each 2,000 miles, or at least once every year.

The replacing of an engine with good maintenance will barely be of concern. If you look after your engine as you should, and go easy on the aftermarket mods, you will not have to be worried about engine failure or replacement. The only potential issues you'll run into for moped scooters are high mileage, no maintenance, and modifications that overwork the engine.

The Good Old Bike Flashback

Back into the early 70's, I was in quest of JD parts to an aged 1924 Harley basket case I had grabbed cheap in an AMC meet in Schenectady, Ny. After much searching, I learned about Bill's Custom Cycles in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. A telephone call confirmed Bill's shop had some of the components I had been hunting for, and so I took Mom's car, took a friend, and out we left for rural Pennsylvania in quest of a biker's gold! Situated in a nondescript cinder block establishing somewhere near the highway, I was unsure of what to anticipate from Bill's. When I walked in, the angels began to sing, and bright light streamed forth from God. I was definitely in the correct destination.

I saw display cases packed with classic reconditioned motors, NOS Harley parts in those amazing orange and black cases, a niche of antique riding hats , and a long, L-shaped counter with shelves filled with stuff behind it. Dispersed over the large area were recovered Barleys of each and every style known: Panheads, 45's, Knuckleheads, a ServiCar, a few Indians. Where ever you look and it was there. Bill , the property owner, specialized in purchasing Harley dealers which had gone belly up. Bill's place was loaded with NOS parts from all eras. Bill also focused on buying out a lot of other things and would buy out anything old that he liked; his catalogue increased to huge proportions!

In 1999, he questioned himself, what's the sense of all this items if you could not see it, feel it, enjoy it, touch it, and easily share it with others? For that reason, he soon began work on what would turn out to be the beginning of his growing museum, known as Bill's Old Bike Barn. He put to use a complete barn he purchased and reassembled the insides the barn to store the exhibits, and it appears good as a background upon which to present his things. He stacked the barn which has a large cross section of motorcycles and bike collectibles.

H-D Traditions: Sport and Enjoyment in Bikes

The beginning of motorcycling at the turn of the last century brought with it besides our favorite form of transportation, but also numerous other activities that surrounded and complemented it. Board-track racing was one of those remarkable recreation that merged Sports and Leisure in the motorcycle industry, and made out a segment for the bold and brave.

According to the early velodromes, wooden trails used in bicycle racing in the later part of 1800s, this part of history was the rise of this kind of motorbike racing. At its very heart and soul, board-track bike racing involved speed competitions organized on oval wooden tracks made from 2 X 4 planks, and the trails were diversified in length from an 8th of a mile, quarter mile, and 3rd of a mile all the way up to two miles.

The earliest advertising campaign I have seen marketing a race-ready bike to the open public was for a limited-production 1915 Indian Model D-1 Speedway bike. The advertisement boasted about "Dynamometer tested-20 Horsepower," and said that "We guarantee this model type will deliver a speed of 70 Miles-per-hour when it simply leaves our factory."

The track problems like oil-soaked boards made bike handling shifty (just like riding on ice in some instances); shooting splinters that felt like arrows kicked up to the rider's faces, eyes, sweaters, etc; chemical like residue from the planks stung their skin; and loose panels did everything they could to knock you off your machine as fast as possible. This gives you some idea of the hardships earned in the name of wining. Death was a continuous friend and occurred frequently that the tracks were occasionally termed as Murderdromes.

The demise of board-track motorbike racing was a result of a mixture of events for a duration of years. The death of the popular racer Eddie Hasha and several youthful spectators at a motordrome in New Jersey, the constant cost of production and up-keep of the race track, the boost in attention of dirt track racing, and the development of amusement alternatives all sounded the death of the sport. By the 40s, the last tracks were disassembled and board-track racing slipped into history but its legacy of velocity and courage carries on to motivate and push us to further evolve the speed racing industry.
