Some Advice On Motocross Track Design

By Carmela Burgess

Motocross is a sport that is gaining attracting more participants for competition or as a pastime. Its main distinction from super cross lies in the fact that riders have to maneuver a more natural terrain track. This, however, does not indicate the lack of attention in the motocross track design process.

Land, being a key resource for this sport, plays a vital role in the end product. Most riders crave a route of adequate length to enhance the experience. For safety purposes the number of lanes required especially at the beginning stages of the race is largely dependent on width of the property.

Location of the property will to a great extent limit the designer. This is more so when aspects such as environmental concerns such as dust and noise pollution in the neighborhood. Implementation will only be successful if permits from the concerned authorities and regulatory bodies are obtained.

Affordability is another area of concern, be it a professional grade or national caliber track. The lay of the land weighs heaviest in the budget. With a little creativity natural slopes can be turned to an advantage when it comes to drainage after a rain. The cost of buying and trucking dirt for building obstacles, jumps and whoops can be avoided by using soil from flattened bumps. Hills can also be cut away to create step-ups, banks and off cambers for a more fulfilling riding experience.

Security is another area demanding scrutiny. It is of essence that only permitted riders be allowed thus the need to keep out intruders. It is worth noting that insurance premiums shall depend on safety measures put in place during design. Choose a course that has fewer hazards such as rocks and trees.

The issue of cost is further extended into the course maintenance. A well furbished knowledge of site topology could eliminate use of costly machines for track drainage and watering. By locating paths in areas where there is less earth moving the motocross track design will minimize running cost for the facility.

By Jovan Flem

Do you delight in racing motorcycles or do you simply enjoy the thrill of taking a fast motorcycle out for a drive? Primarily unveiled in 1985, the Yamaha VMAX is considered to be one of the fastest motorcycles available on the market. It isn't really a motorbike for beginners, but for those who are seasoned riders, and wanting speed and excitement when riding their motorcycle. Its most outstanding characteristic is the V-Boost which is capable of speeds as much as 800 RMP. The cylinders are fed through four downshaft carburetors, that are each separated by butterfly valves. Comparable hot rod bikes do not come anywhere near the same horsepower as the V-Boost. The VMAX also obtains rapid and smooth acceleration from the V-Boost. The earliest VMAX, that was solely introduced in the United States, included a V4 1200 CC engine, and had 145 HP and V-Boost. The year 1986 witnessed the European launch of a 104 HP model by Yamaha. The V-Boost was not offered on the European motorbikes. A digital electronic ignition was included with the bike before it was released in Japan in 1990.

The European design had to be revised due to the enforcement of strict noise restrictions throughout Europe. So in 1996 there was a switch to a black exhaust system by Yamaha, which actually wasn't very well received by bike owners, therefore the chrome design was back in 1998. For many bike riders, the VMAX is much more powerful than what they want, but for the thousands of members of the VMAX Owners Association, they are most proud of their bikes. The Association organizes different rallies and races for their multitude of members. The bike has even found its way into drag racing as well, since the VMAX with its speed gives many of the competitors a greater chance of winning. A few main competitions have witnessed modified VMAX bikes achieve speeds in excess of 200 MPH in a quarter mile.

The Yamaha VMAX has persistently been a top motorcycle choice since it broke into the market in 1985. Its black and chrome color affords the bike a robust and almost muscular look. For many people this lack of originality is the only drawback. Some people have added personal variations to make their bike distinctive. What they have done is add unique exhaust systems, different mirrors, adding decals to various places on the motorcycle, and much more. Quite a few riders have also chosen to substitute a more comfortable seat for the one that came with the VMAX. Considering that the most attractive aspect of the bike is its power, adding these unique touches is not difficult.

For more than 20 years, the Yamaha VMAX has maintained its standing as the top rated muscle bike in the world. This bike is a top achiever with regards to how it performs as well as how it looks but it's very much a bike for experienced bikers.

New Riding Glasses: Is The Time Right To Invest In A Pair

By Kristina Khol

Much of my writing lately has been about bifocal riding glasses. So much so that one of my friends who still rides her bike mentioned it to me. In fact, one of my recent columns came up during a discussion of her trading in her Victory V92TC Touring Cruiser for a new Can Am Spyder.

Anyway, she was telling me how she's been using bifocal riding glasses for years in order to help her see her instrument cluster better. But she was saying how she thinks that now might be the right time for her to invest in some new riding glasses or goggles especially with the new biker season about to start.

Why would you need new riding glasses?

My friend is a couple of years older than I am and her eyesight is beginning to fail. Until a while ago, she could go about her daily routine without having to wear regular glasses. She only needed glasses to wear when she was on the computer or for reading the paper.

However, it has got to the stage where she now needs to wear her glasses everyday. She is not going to be able to wear her regular glasses with the bifocal riding glasses because it will not work.

I suspect she will end up either purchasing a new pair of goggles or getting a pair of riding glasses she can wear over her regular eyeglasses. Or else it will be necessary to go for contact lenses so that she can continue to use the bifocal riding glasses. But since she's getting the Spyder, I reckon it would be worth embracing the goggles.

So you can see that bikers do get old as well. Most bikers think that while they are in the saddle, they will stay young forever but this is not the case; our ears, eyes and knees will tell us different. It becomes even more evident on long rides. However, it is much preferable for a biker to stay in the saddle and get older than to try and beat the aging process by doing Pilates or sitting in a rocking chair!
