In 1983, he did just that when he designed and built the RW750 motorcycle specifically to compete within the AMA Formula One road racing class.

Buell tested the RW750 motorcycle throughout 1983 and clocked a top speed of 178 mph during testing at Talladega, Alabama. The very first production of the Buell RW750 was released within the fall of 1984.

The following year, the American Machinists Racing Team announced that 1985 would be the last year for Formula One racing. Buell's form of motorcycle would be eliminated from your racing circuit. In 1991, Buell introduced a single-seat version from the RS1200. The Thunderbolt S2 was introduced in 1994 under partnership with Harley-Davidson. A sport-touring version, the S2T, was included with the Buell line-up in 1995.

A brand new line of street bikes were introduced in 1996, such as the Lightning S1 motorcycle which was voted "Hooligan Bike from the Year" by Cycle World Magazine. Other innovations included two new types of the Thunderbolt motorcycle; the Thunderbolt S3 and also the Thunderbolt S3T.

Buell introduced the Cyclone M2 touring bike in 1997 and developed the Thunderstorm engine in 1998.

In 1999, Buell presented completely redesigned models of the Lighting and Cyclone motorcycles. Both bikes had new body styles, frame, suspension, larger and more comfortable seats, and bold colors.

At the conclusion of 1999, Buell's new designs and engineering innovations pushed sales to greater than 8,000 motorcycles in a single year.

Buell has always maintained an in depth relationship with Harley-Davidson. In February 1994, Harley-Davidson purchased 49 percent of Erik Buell's company and the new Buell Motorcycle Company was created.

You are Never too Old to Be a Biker

So yesterday (this is a true story) I was on I-4 on the way to the airport after spending eight glorious days in the Florida sunshine. I was sitting there thinking about the week I had just had when I looked to my left and noticed a group of three bikers. Being that they we were all heading north I assumed the trio was headed for Daytona Beach. After all, Bike week is on right now and will be until the 18th March. They only had to travel 75 miles and luckily they had some fantastic weather to warm them on the way.

However the age of these bikers was something that I found unusual. While one was about the same age as me (mid-40s), the other two were obviously much older. I remember thinking that they could well have done with a pair of bifocal riding glasses and some discounts at restaurants for seniors.

They each had a head of grey hair that was blowing behind them and they both wore biker leathers and had a number of different tattoos. They had passed me by before I could see if they were patched. Yet I thought to myself, "Old bikers never die; they just go to that Big Rally in the sky".

Bifocal riding glasses or not, you're never too old to ride. There is nothing better than enjoying the freedom of the open road with the wind in your hair. In fact, when it comes to travelling around the country, many of us prefer to do it from the back of a motorcycle instead of sitting in a cramped car or tour bus. Until you have been on the back of a motorbike, you just can't understand how free you will feel.

Well I have now left Florida behind and am back working and unfortunately the bike season will not start here for at least another month. But before long we'll see plenty of bikers out and about on our local roads. I hope the three bikers I saw on the I-4 are now chilling out at the Daytona Bike week.
