Cutting Down On Fuel

By Simon Darehuk

Prices of gasoline are sky high these days and squeezing an extra distance for every gallon that you load will eventually add up and mean savings. Whether you are driving a 2-seat hybrid or a 3-ton SUV, it is essential that you use a fuel saver device to cut fuel costs. The following are tips on how you can save money on gas. If the rules are used one at a time, you will see little decrease in fuel consumption, but if used altogether, you will soon see a big difference.

Drive slowly. Probably the best fuel saving tip you can get is to slow down. This is because as your speed increases, the engine also works very hard and takes in more fuel. Thus, if you drive at a moderate speed, the engine does not have to work hard and it burns fuel economically.

Look at the pressure of your tires. Make sure that your tire is sufficiently inflated. Under-inflated tires have more rolling resistance making the engine burn more gas to keep moving. Purchase a reliable tire guage and have your tire pressure checked each month.

Clean the air filter. Dirty or dusty air filter restricts the flow of air into the engine which takes its toll on your vehicle's performance and economy. Checking and replacing the filters is very simple. Just remove the filter and hold it towards the sun. If no light passes through, it means that it is covered with dust and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Do not turn off the engine while waiting in traffic. Some people are not aware that the engine burns more fuel when starting than when it is moving. Your fuel savings from not turning off the engine at every red light will add up to bigger savings.

Do not use the air conditioning system. Why don't you try rolling down your window and let the breeze cool the air indide your car? This will let you save on fuel. However, if driving at high speeds, you will not feel any significant decrease in consumption. If you drive at a slower speed, it is only then that you will cut down on fuel.
