DIY Motorcycle Tech: Checking Your Braking system

By Darnell Austria

Brakes are sometimes neglected by many riders once they have serviced unlimited miles halting your motorbike when you need them. This simple do-it-yourself routine maintenance of your braking system is another reminder that we should check them habitually and be sure they function correctly to avoid being among a huge number of victims from bike accidents.

After many years and miles of use, your braking systems could possibly be providing you poor functioning and you do not possibly know it. Do your braking system provide easy progressive braking or do they perform like a switch -all or none? This doesn't indicate that they are flawed or worn-out, your calipers just need serviced. There are sealing o-rings in the calipers that simply must be cleaned and lubed. Following this, it will improve your stopping functionality significantly. I've found mid to late make Harleys need caliper routine maintenance.

The way to know if your bike needs this is to simply squeeze the handle. If it touches or is near the accelerator grip, your calipers need serviced. The things you're gonna need to try this job is some brake clean and some type of lubricant similar to Tool Box Buddy and a pry bar.

Remove your calipers from your bike and squeeze the brake handle. You'll see, just a pair of the four pistons in the caliper happen to be working okay. The other 2 are firmly sticking.

So what you need to do is clean the caliper pistons, spray some brake clean on them and dry with compressed air. You will need to carry such out several times since this depends how dirty your calipers are.

When your caliper pistons are nice and clean, apply some lubricant on them. Then get your pry bar and insert it between your brake pads and pry the pistons back into their bores. At this moment squeeze your brake handle and check how the pistons come out of the caliper. What you're after is that all of the pistons all come out simultaneously and at the same time. You are going to need to do this a couple of times to have them turn out smoothly.

This is what you're aiming: all pistons evenly extended. This certainly will take 5 to 10 squeezes of the brake handle. Re-install your brake and tightenthe caliper bolts to specification, usually 35 ft. lbs.

Pump your brake handle until you get a nice strong feel. Pay attention to just how far away the handle is from the throttle hand grip. That is the way your brake lever should feel and look. At this point you need to take your motorcycle for a test ride. Use caution and give yourself plenty of time to adapt to the newly serviced brakes. This particular tip can be applied to anything that has brake calipers, quite possibly your old truck.

Before we part ways, keep in mind that even a good brake system may fail. In case that time occurs, we should be ready at all cost. Be sure to wear any protective helmets to prevent severe traumas. If you're thinking you might be compromising style when riding a bike with a helmet, look around, try fitting a German motorcycle helmet or any stylish protective gear that suite your Harley's looks. Just make sure they are made from the highest quality; Not only you are safe, you're way looking cool with it. Ride Safe and happy riding!
