Motorcycle helmets: the importance of getting the right fit

By Niall Walker

The motorcycle helmet is undoubtedly the most important piece of motorcycle clothing you will have. It has the potential to save your face, your brain, and maybe even your life.

Everyday use will eventually compromise a helmet's ability to protect a rider's head, and so should be replaced every few years. Any kind of impact will also diminish or destroy a helmet's protective capacities, even if no damage is visible on the outer shell or liner. So, if you drop your helmet on the floor, it must be replaced.

You will find motorcycle helmets of all kinds of designs and prices, but you must remain focused on the essential considerations of protection and comfort. Only consider buying a helmet that meets current safety standards. Motorcycle helmets disperse energy on impact and then absorb the shock of that impact, reducing the forces inflicted on the head. They also protect the eyes from debris and wind, and improve hearing.

You then need to try it on. It should be a snug fit, and should sit squarely on your head. If a helmet is too large it will rattle around on your head, let in the wind, and more importantly, it may come off in the event of an accident. Cheek and brow pads should touch your face without being uncomfortable.

Once the helmet is comfortably on your head, try to move it up and down and see whether your skin moves with it. You should feel a slight, even pressure, although the face shield should not be in contact with nose or chin. Fasten the chin straps and ensure that the motorcycle helmet cannot be pulled off.

Motorcycle helmets should fit tightly but without creating pressure points. Your helmet needs to be comfortable so you can concentrate on riding, and any excess pressure could be distracting or create headaches. Having a helmet is necessary protection, but it is equally essential to choose one that fits correctly.
