Using a Cover to Protect Your Motorcycle in the Winter

By Amanda Weil

No one looks forward to having to store their motorcycle for the winter, but at some point during the year you will have to. One of the best ways to protect your motorcycle in the winter is by parking it a storage facility or a garage to keep it safe from the elements. Parking in a garage is the first step in protection, though you still need to use premium motorcycle covers protect it. Consider making the investment in a premium breathable, fleece-lined cover. Skimping on your motorcycle's winter cover is not something you want to do.

Keep in mind that even if you don't have a garage or storage facility for your motorcycle, it is even more important than ever to use a high quality, premium motorcycle cover. Even if you're using a storage facility, a motorcycle cover is crucial to protecting the bike's seat and its paint job and electronic components.

There are myriad styles of covers that you can purchase to protect your bike, but you will need to buy one that not only is waterproof but one that offers protection from the sun's UV rays. Find a cover with straps, elastic seams and tie-down buckles to keep it attached securely to the bike in the event of high winds. The cover should be specifically made for your type and style of motorcycle. You will also want to use a bike cover year round - not just when your motorcycle is in storage for the winter.

If you go on road trips you will definitely want to take your motorcycle cover along with you for the trip and use it once you're parking at the end of the day. The cover should fold up and fit into its own pouch and can be stored in your bike bags when you're riding during the day.

Buying a custom motorcycle cover when you make the investment in your motorcycle is a great idea. Make certain the cover fits your style of bike and if you get diligent in using the cover from the very beginning you will go a long way in protecting the bike's paint job and the seat as well. Even when your motorcycle is stored for the winter you can still use the same cover you'd used all year as long as you purchased a high quality one. Make an effort to check on the motorcycle while it is stored for the winter months to make certain no rodents have taken up residents as they may be able to crawl under the cover if it isn't snug fitting.
