Car Selections That Are Eco-Friendly

By Carlo Mangina

The more we rely on fossil fuels, the more we can expect to find our environment destroyed by its effects. We need to see a shift and autos are definitely an area we can focus on. Cars add to the emissions released which can damage the environment, so it's not surprising that automobile producers have started making eco friendly cars.

The most eco friendly auto, from the extensive choice available, may well be the battery powered car. Since the battery is the main source of power, the car doesn't require any of the common car gasoline. Sounds superb as it doesn't need gasoline, so you can save money and it's environmentally friendly which is terrific, but there is a downside. The auto engines themselves are a little restrictive right now but the cars are now available to the public. This means that you must recharge the battery after approximately 100 miles, so it doesn't run very far on one run.

Still one option available is a hybrid car. They run on both a battery and gasoline and are environmentally friendly. You might be thinking, 'How is that possible?' Well, I'll tell you. It is the electricity coming from the battery that is used initially by the car. When the hybrid reaches a specific speed, it starts using petrol, giving the hybrid a lot of power for the highway. One good thing is the automatic battery charging as a result of fuel use, so you don't have to do this yourself.

Another option is a vehicle known as a plug-in hybrid vehicle. They operate much in the same way as the previous hybrid car and are eco friendly. However, the regular hybrid car does not need to be recharged separately whereas this is not the case with the plug-in hybrid. In terms of fuel consumption, both types of hybrid seem to do better than your regular car.

The Prius is a hybrid model created by Toyota and is able to do 50 miles per gallon. It is priced at roughly $22,000 and is now one of the market leaders. Toyota is not the only one who is selling hybrids, though; Honda has created the 'Insight' and in fact this car was the first hybrid vehicle to be released to consumers. It was not received in the same way as the Prius by Toyota but it jumpstated the consumer market for hybrid vehicles. There's also the Ford Fusion Hybrid which has gotten lots of accolades and is sold for about $27,000. In the United States, the Ford Fusion has been bestowed the honor of being the number one hybrid vehicle on the market. Mitsubishi's i-MiEV is said to boast of a zero emission level. In terms of Japanese auto manufacturers, it was among the earliest electric vehicles made.

As technology advances and the market becomes larger we are going to see more choices for buyers in the hybrid and environmentally friendly car market.
