The Most Dangerous Roads in the World for Motorbike Accidents

By Simon Thompson

For a passionate biker, life on two wheels is an exhilarating and unbeatable feeling; however you must recognise the risks every time you take to the roads. Motorcyclists represent 1% of all traffic on the road in the UK, however they account for up to 20% of all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. Too often bikers are involved in road traffic accidents and they are 40 times more likely to be killed than car drivers.

In a report by the Road Safety Foundation, the A537 was claimed to be Britain's most dangerous road. The 50km single carriageway has taken the lives of twenty motorcyclists in the past five years. However, other roads across the world have seen far worse motorcycle casualties. Here are three of the worst roads for bikers in the world:

* Russia - The Trans-Siberian Highway - One of the longest highways in the world, the Trans-Siberian Highway stretches 11,000km from St. Petersburg to Vladivostock and is famous for its almost impossible driving conditions. The road turns from concrete to a dirt track in the east and during the wet summers it is prone to becoming a treacherous mud pit.

* The Trans-Siberian Highway - Russia - The Russian highway which stretches 11,000km from St. Petersburg in the west to Vladivostock in the east is famous for its almost impossible driving conditions, making it extremely unsafe for motorbikes. Most of the road becomes nothing more than a dirt track with no indication where the road starts and ends. During the hot, wet summers, the road can, in places, become an impassable bog which has resulted in a great number of motorcycle accidents.

* The North Yungas Road - Bolivia - The 60km track is only a short journey from the Bolivian capital of La Paz to the town of Corioco, however it has taken more lives than any other road in the world. Better known as the "Death Road", motorists often have to risk falling down a 600m cliff edge to try and get past vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

How to Prevent the Risk of Motorcycle Accidents this Winter

With Britain facing the harsh cold of winter, it's important to prepare yourself for the potentially hazardous conditions on the roads:

* If a motorcycle is your only choice of transport, only travel if the journey is necessary

* Only use a motorbike if it is an essential journey during hazardous conditions.

* Be sure to wear warm, protective gear that is clearly visible to other motorists.
