Dumpster Rental: A Few Items To Remember

By Sandi Feris

It's just a plain fact that for most folks out there, they can go pretty much all their lives and only have to rent a dumpster but maybe once, or twice. Hence, when it does come time to make the arrangements to have one delivered, far too many people are completely in the dark with regards to so many of the particulars. The size to get, and such. The fact is that there's a lot to it.

As an example when most first time renters are considering what size they need, they tend to only take the volume of their waste into account. In reality, an equal concern should be the "weight" because there are limitations. For instance if you are going to be hauling away particularly heavy materials like, say scrap steel, you most likely are going to need a bigger bin than you think.

The problem here is that the company will have a limit on how high you can fill the bin with these heavier materials. As an example your limit with rock or concrete chunks will be about 2 feet high. That's it. Load the unit any higher and they can refuse to haul it until you remove the excess, and you can get stuck paying for each day over you're stuck with it.

Still one more thing that you may have neglected to consider, is that you can't load any hazardous waste materials into a standard haul away dumpster. Things like old motors that haven't had their oil drained and even old sealed paint cans are considered hazardous, and then you have asbestos. You see a lot of older homes have it in their tiles and siding, even though it's been long since banned.

Yet one more tip, is if you are going to be renting a smaller dumpster with a lid on it, consider buying a lock for it. The problem here is that someone else may take advantage of your dumpster to clean out their trash, and dump it in yours in the middle of the night. Now with a larger unit that's not a problem, however with a smaller unit you can end up filled up with someone else's rubbish.

The last thing that you need to keep in mind is getting a permit. Now if you have room on your lot or in your yard you won't need one, but if you have to park your haul away in the street you will definitely need one. A permit is cheap and the company can tell you where to get it, and by the way, if you're ticketed without one, you can end up with a hefty fine.
