Motorcycle Protective Headgear: Their Role And Their Culture

By Khoei Draker

To those who have only travelled on four wheels, motorcyclists seem to lead a fascinating lifestyle. The rider willingly submits themselves to the elements, especially the fast wind felt at high speeds. There is a sense of thrill-seeking and freedom which is not gained within the container of a car. One of the most striking piece of bikers' gear is motorcycle helmets.

The helmet's purpose is to keep the neck and skull from fatal force on impact. Additionally, if it is full-faced, it provides an air of mystery regarding the rider's identity.

It should be noted that not all helmets fully cover the face. The ones that do are for high speed bikers who do not want bug-shaped missiles to hit their faces at 120kph. Imagine a car's windscreen on a night with swarms of flying insects. Besides obscuring vision, t hey are a danger and an annoyance. When on a bike, this cannot be pleasant in ones eyes.

It is the same with rainy days, and this is when full face helmets make it possible to ride at all. In other weather, it can be a help by protecting from sunburn, and keeping the head warm in cold conditions. Most body heat is lost through the head.

The helmet is like a small windscreen for a biker. But other than preventing the discomforts described, its main role is safety in the event of an accident. It is designed to break on impact to minimize the force exerted on the skull against a surface.

Once the practical purposes are covered, choosing a helmet can actually be fun, as there are many different styles and designs to suit your personality. Some companies make novelty helmets with images and shapes from popular culture, such as knights, Spiderman, Ironman, and many more. Your choice depends on how much attention you wish to attract. However wacky the design, ensure that it meets minimal safety standards. It is better to choose bold colors, as they are easier to see at night by drivers. Once you have chosen your helmet, you can browse other motorcycle accessories like jackets, gloves, and boots.

To complete the safety measures, bikers need to check and replace motorcycle parts from time to time. With the helmet, the visor tends to become wind-damaged from small, high impact particles.
