How To Protect Yourself While Biking: Sportbike Apparel

By Khoei Draker

When picking out sportbike apparel, it can be very tempting to make decisions just based on what looks good. While great style is of course an option, safety is the most important priority. There are varying laws in states, but while they support free choice, they do not necessarily promote the safest way to ride.

When decking out the bike with high-end motorcycle parts, it can be just as fun picking out special motorcycle accessories. The first accessory someone should ever purchase is a good helmet.

When driving in a car, the body of the car and the windshield protects the person inside from the wind and from flying dust and debris. A bike has none of these benefits. A helmet not only protects the skull from basic damage, it protects the eyes and face from unnecessary injury. Not all helmets are full-face, but that is the one that provides the most protection.

Biking can be tricky, and if the weather is not ideal, or something happens that was not planned, the rider can crash. But there is no barrier between the rider and the dirt road or the cement, and so intense damage can be done.

A surefire method to reduce the potential damage caused in an accident is to wear special biking pants and a jacket. The average shirt and shorts combination leaves large stretches of skin vulnerable, and the fabric is so weak that it provides next to no protection anyway.

This special clothes are made of thicker, much sturdier fabric or leather. Do not be intimidated- there are versions for cold weather and for warmer weather. The thick material that the clothing is made out of does not tear as quickly in the event of a crash, and so can help minimize bodily harm done. There is extra padding at the knees and elbows to try to save the thin skin there.

When getting gear, lots of people forget about protecting their hands and feet. There are a lot of tiny bones that can shatter without any protection. Wearing heavy leather boots with steel toes are great for this, and they should go up past the ankle. Gloves should be made out of sturdy, tough leather or an equally strong material as well.

Be positive the gear is designed for bikes. Sportbike apparel is made specifically to offer protection while riding-fashion-focused clothing can be very weak, even if it is made out of leather. Biking gear can cost more in the short term than regular clothing, but the safety benefits it offers make it completely worth it.
