Choosing A Motorcycle Helmet

By Khoei Draker

Motorcycles are rapidly becoming more popular with people from every walk of life and every age group. These are economical, convenient vehicles which are ideal for urban, suburban and rural living. However, there are many who have recently taken up riding a motorcycle who do not realize just how critical it is to wear a helmet whenever they are on the road. As it happens, a motorcycle helmet is the single most important of the motorcycle accessories that you will need before you get on the road.

Obviously, you will need to go to a motorcycle parts shop to get a helmet in order to protect yourself from sustaining head injuries in the event of an accident. While motorcyclists tend to be careful about other motorists, other drivers may not be doing the same and wearing a helmet is essential to preventing serious injury or death if you are unfortunate enough to be in a collision or other accident while on the road. A helmet with a face shield can also protect you from solar UV radiation as well as dampening the noise of your engine to protect your hearing.

A motorcycle helmet can cost as little as $30 or upwards of $500, depending on the brand and style you choose. You can find any style of helmet you like at shops which specialize in motorcycles and motorcycle accessories. Before you choose a helmet, try on several different sizes in order to find one which fits you properly. The basic styles of helmet that you can choose from include beanie, half shell, three quarter and full face.

Beanie and half shell helmets protect only the top of your head. Stylish though they may be, they do not provide the kind of protection that a full face helmet will in an accident.

A modular, or three quarter style helmet covers, as the name implies, three quarters of your head. It does not provide protection for your face, but it does cover everything else. If you choose to wear this style of helmet, you should also wear goggles in order to provide protection for your eyes while you ride.

Full face helmets provide the most protection. This style of motorcycle helmet is like a three quarter helmet with the addition of a face shield which can be raised or lowered as needed. They give your head proper protection if you are in a collision or other accident. Finally, avoid used helmets. They may be less costly than new motorcycle helmets, but it is nearly impossible to gauge if the foam is entirely intact, so always choose a new helmet to get the best possible protection.
