The Dual Functions of Motorcycle Clothing

By Khoei Draker

Experienced bikers know that motorcycle apparel is more than just a fashion statement. It is as important a purchase as motorcycle parts for the bike itself. In an accident, your clothing is the only thing between your skin and the pavement over which you will be moving at high speed. In many cases protective clothing is literally the difference between life and death.

Many motorcycle experts recommend that novices buy their first set of protective motorcycle clothing before ever getting onto their bike. That gives them the protection they need while they're going through the learning process. At the least, one complete set of motorcycle apparel should be purchased quickly. You can make some initial motorcycle clothing purchases while you're browsing through the motorcycle accessories at your local shop.

What to Buy:

- A helmet should be at the top of any beginning biker's shopping list. Riding without a helmet is a terrible idea for a novice, even if the law allows it. Neophyte motorcyclists do fall, and until they learn enough to ride competently and can make an informed decision about wearing a helmet, their heads should be protected. The visor that comes with the helmet can be replaced.

- A balaclava is important to keep the wind out of a rider's face. They not only preserve comfort but also provide a great opportunity to make a fashion statement. Balaclavas come in a wide variety of patterns and colors.

- Motorcycle boots are low heeled to help control the bike. They are usually made of heavy leather for protection against pavement. Riding boots should fit as well as any other footwear.

- Padded gloves can also help prevent serious injuries, because a person who's falling will tend to reach out with their hands. Naturally, your gloves need to be flexible enough to let you drive your bike safely.

- You can wear a one-piece suit or a jacket and pants. Either way, your body wear should be thick enough to protect you if you're being dragged over a rough surface. Look for clothing that's reinforced and tough enough to do the job. You want your clothing to fit tightly against your body so that it stays in place if you're in an accident.

What you wear will say a great deal about you. If your motorcycle gear is all flash and no protection, people might think you talk more about motorcycles than you ride them. Rugged motorcycle apparel and the protection it provides will let everyone know you have common sense as well as serious biking skills.
