Staying safe on a motorcycle

By Christopher Robert Norris

It is difficult to argue with people when they tell you riding a motorcycle could get you killed. Doing a lot of things could get you killed but the statistics for injury and death on a motorcycle are glaringly sobering. Yet why is this? What are the things that cause the majority of motorcycle accidents? Is it possible to enjoy the hobby and not be thought of as foolish?

Statistics show that in most accidents involving a motorcycle, the rider is usually always injured, and many times the injury is serious. In one study, it was found that 92% of the motorcyclists involved were self-taught, or taught by family and friends, and over half of them had been riding for less than five months. This would suggest that a combination of proper riding lessons and giving time to become experienced are invaluable to staying safe.

One of the reasons why motorcycle jackets need to be highly visible is that one of the most common reasons for accidents involves an unseen rider, in the day or in the night, or due to poor weather conditions. So taking every precaution to being seen is essential. Assuming that drivers really should notice you can be fatal. It really is your responsibly to ensure you are seen. Other causes of accidents involve riding at high speeds, dangerous roads, dangerous weather, and alcohol.

With all the "minor injuries" that do inevitably occur in bike accidents, the thing that keeps minor injuries from becoming major ones is wearing the proper gear. Motorcycle helmets are a must. Motorcycle boots and motorcycle trousers are also highly protective in a heavy fall.

People who ride motorcycles are passionate about it, and the older people get, the wiser they become. It is not worth it to take risks with excessive speed and alcohol. Sometimes poor weather conditions cannot be avoided if someone is using a bike to commute, but this is where learning to ride with more skill is essential and extra riding lessons could be a benefit.
