Sportbikes - Road Rockets for Throttle Jockeys

By Kristen Wesch

Sportbikes are made for speed and designed for agility. Their power combined with their light weight require a rider to be experienced in performing precisely and fluidly at very high speeds. Ask any rider and they will tell you that those particular qualities can make for the ride of a lifetime, or, alternatively, end in tragedy. The margin of error at 150 mph is extremely narrow.

Safety should be every rider's number one priority. Although most sportbikes are best suited for the race track, they have become a staple in our society for commuting and joy riding speed freaks. Ultimately, we choose to ride these tightly wound, twitchy performance machines that are no match for a misplaced piece of gravel, never mind cars, trucks, road debris and pavement discrepancies... to name a few.

One of the greatest things riders have going for them is affordable, innovative and easily obtainable protective gear. The dangers of riding are clear. For most, it's not a matter of if you go down, but when and how bad. A helmet and leathers will certainly not guarantee that you will survive an accident, but will definitely improve your odds.

Take heed of the examples set by the motorcycle racing professionals like Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner. You would never see them rocketing around the circuit at 200 mph in a T-shirt and shorts without a helmet. Their leathers are their lives!

Whether you choose to ride a small displacement supersport bike like a CBR600RR, or a performance geared, liter-class super bike like the Honda CBR1000RR and the Suzuki GSX-R1000, or even a hypersport bike like the Hayabusa or Kawasaki ZX-14, repeat, repeat and remember.... learn it, respect it, live it, love it, GEAR UP and ride!!
