The day I started my love affair with motorcycles was the first day I ever rode one. It was towards the end of the summer in 1983 and I was shooting hoops in my driveway. I was embarrassing myself with my best Larry Bird impression when I heard my brother driving down the street on an almost new Yamaha.
After three long years in the military he had been discharged and was finally home. The sun was bouncing off his helmet and riding glasses and he had just completed a three day ride from Texas.
I just stared in wonder.
He must have known straight away because after hugging me, he offered to let me have a ride of the bike up and down the street. At just eighteen years of age and with a driver's license without a motorcycle endorsement, my brother was allowing me to take his new bike for a spin. He didn't even have a chance to tell me to be careful of the hot exhaust pipe because I was so eager to hop on to the bike; needless to say I burned my leg in the process!
As soon as the riding glasses and helmet were in place and after he had given me a quick tutorial, I was off. Just like most new bikers, I did hit the throttle a bit too hard and almost had the bike over my head. However, I'm sure someone was watching over me because the bike stayed on the ground. I absolutely adored it and only came back home because my brother was starting to get annoyed.
Well, it didn't take long before I was out shopping for my own motorcycle. In fact, I managed to get my hands on a nearly new Honda 550-Four that very December and also bought a brand new helmet and riding glasses.
And the rest, they say, is history.
