HJC Helmets: Things To Look For In A New Helmet

By Ryan L. Warren

Whether purchasing HJC helmets or some other brand, it is vital that the person know what to look for so that the make a good choice. The wrong type of protection can be less effective and can actually increase the chances of injury. For this reason it is important riders know the most important features of a new helmet.

The first question that a person should ask is whether or not they even want to wear a helmet. Some have claimed that riders are more likely to get into accidents if their vision is impaired by wearing a helmet. However, the overwhelming consensus of every single study is that people who wear a helmet are much less likely to be killed or injured in an accident, so it is smart to wear one.

Before buying any helmet the rider should be certain that it carries the seal of approval from the Department of Transportation. The DOT sticker can be found on the back of the helmet and guarantees that the device has been tested and met all safety requirements. Helmets that do not have this sticker have not been proven to work in an accident and should be avoided.

Retention is another feature that is extremely important when it comes to buying a helmet. Retention basically means that the helmet is going to stay on the head in the event of an accident. The best way to test this is to strap the helmet on and then try to lift it off. It should be impossible to remove. If it comes off easily then there is no guarantee that it will stay on in a crash.

Another important thing to consider is the fit. Not only will this help with keeping the helmet on the head, but will increase the chances that it works effectively during a crash. It should be stable when moving the head from side to side. Many employees at stores that sell this type of equipment will be trained in how to do a fitting, so it is best to talk to a professional.

Coverage is another important thing to consider. This means that the helmet is covering all of the most exposed parts of the head and face. There should be some kind of mask that will protect the eyes and a face guard which protects the mouth and jaw.

HJC helmets, as well as other brands, come in many models. This is why knowing the necessary features is so important. By doing a little research and asking the help of a professional, a rider can be sure they are protected in a crash.
